The plasti dip worked the best I think. It looks good and I can remove it if I want. Also, even though I masked off, you don't have to worry about overspray as much with plasti dip since you can just scrub it off unlike spray paint.
Oh! I also modified the canopy. I took two hinges and installed them, but instead of the panel opening upward it has to open out and to the left due to the construction of the canopy. Not my favorite, but it works. I will take a picture tonight. I was going to cut the glass myself for the sump, but kept cracking it so I think I may just buy it from a glass shop.
Question on plumbing. My drains are 1.5in. Going to my sump will be about 3 feet. Should I reduce the size of the pipe to .75? I'm not good at the whole plumbing aspect of things in regards to gph. I guess I could just control the flow with a ball valve right?
I'm thinking I've heard you don't want anything on the drain that can clog ... not even sure how mine is plumbed other than it's using the clear flexible hoses. There are 2 draining and 1 return. No clue about gph ...
Why would you reduce so far from 1.5" down to .75? While I know the pressures are not anywhere close to this high, the chart attached does show a good indication of the relationship between the flow rate of each of those "pipes".
I would try to limit the restriction points in the system. That way if you decide to ever get a larger pump the existing plumbing would support the additional flow. The bottlenecks for your purpose will probably be the input and output of the pump itself, you should shoot to impede the flow as little as possible with the plumbing, sans the addition of ball valves to limit flow in the event your pump is over running the overflow.
Here it is. I installed the lights into the canopy. It worked out perfectly. I'vee been trying to get a place to cut me some glass for the sump. The place I contacted today says the minimum they do is 1sq foot and that it would be 7 bucks. Anyone know of a place that will cut smaller than that in the Conway/LR area?
1.5" drains are huge for a 40 gallon. I'm running 1" drains on my 155 gallon tank with a return pump delivering about 1400 gph. Is that what your overflow came with? What type of drain set up are you running? Durso? How many drains? I for sure wouldn't go down to 3/4" There's a big difference in 3/4 and 1 inch.
Allied Glass and Jones Glass are in Benton. If you call and they can/will do what you want, I'd be happy to pick it up and meet you somewhere ...
How were you trying to cut it? Just had a thought ... have you ever been to The Painted Pig in LR? They are an art studio that does glass art. They have glass cutters and pliers and could probably help you cut it if you took in the pieces.
Yeah, that's what the overflow came with. I was talking to the company and asked if they wanted to donate the overflow system and they agreed. I told him what like of set up I was doing and he suggested their 700 with emergency overflow for my 40 gallon. Here is a link to the video of him installing this system. I don't think it is a durso so that's why I will show you the video, Im not sure what kind of "setup" it is. To me its a overflow box with a drain. haha There is only one main drain and then a emergency drain for if something were to happen. I will just add a ball valve. It is rated up to 1500 gph so with a ball valve I should be fine....right?
I will check them out. I can actually just go pick it up. My parents live in Bryant so I could see them when I go pick it up.
I bought a little glass cutter from HD and tried to do it that way, but it felt like it never scored well enough to make a clean break when attempting that part. Its not a big deal that I broke a piece since it was only 3 bucks.
That's an open stand pipe with a dry emergency (basically it is a Durso). This means it's not a full siphon. I would plumb it with 1.5" all the way. Open stand pipes can only handle a fraction of what a full siphon can. An example is my 1" full siphon is handling 1400+ gph and I have it dialed back a little with a gate valve. Interesting design. I also like gate valves instead of ball valves in this application....easier to adjust.
Okay great! Now I have a question for you. This is the pump I got. The reviews say it is awesome and the videos prove this, I will use a little bit of gph due to it going up, but I am kind of worried about more water being pumped into the DT than is going into the sump and visa versa. What can I do to combat this? Gate valves? https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B017R709UE/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1
Well I called both Jones and Allied and both were swamped till Monday, but I got a place on Col. Glenn to do some for me today. Les than I thought too. only 16 bucks for 3 custom pieces
Well you can't really drain more than you're pumping up there. As for the opposite, that overflow with 1.5" drain should handle everything that pump can throw at it. Will be interesting to see how durable that pump is. Never , ever seen a return pump that size that inexpensive. Keep us posted.
Since it was only 20 bucks I figured I would give it a shot. If it ends up being a 20 dollar pump I will just invest the money and get something better, but hopefully it will work.
