How big of a hole do I need in my return line to break the siphon if the power was to go and it started to back flow??

Size doesn't matter really, it is more important in my opinion to have multiple holes in a few different places so if a snail happens to be on your break siphon you don't end up wading to your tank.

just make sure you check then periodically to ensure they haven't clogged up.

1/8" should be fine you just want to introduce air into the lines to break the siphon
