need suggestions for my 1st corals...

Discussion in 'Beginning Reefers' started by nanoreefing4fun, Apr 2, 2009.

  1. My new 34 gal tank (Red Sea Max), just finished cycle & I am about to start adding some coral in the next week or so... and my CUC (snails & a shrimp - I think I got the CUC figured out).

My question is... What are some good starter hardy corals, ones that are very pretty in your opinions?

How many can I add at one time, in a just cycled tank, like one or two per month?

From the Red Sea Max website, I extracted the below, they say my lightening will support.
In long-term tests we conducted on the MAX in our laboratory, the system proved capable of supporting all soft corals (Sarcophyton sp., Lobophytum sp., Sinularia sp., Xenia; Cladiella sp., etc.), all LPSs (Large Polyp Scleractinia, like Euphyllia sp., Plerogyra sp., Nemenzophyllia sp., Trachphyllia sp., Caulestra sp., etc.), some SPSs (Small Polyp Scleractinia, such as Stylophora sp. and Seriatopora), sea anemones, all types of crustacean (cleaner shrimps, peppermint shrimps, hermit crabs, scarlet hermit crabs), sea stars and giant clams (Tridacna sp.).

I live in Lakewood in NLR & would be willing to travel to buy any frags anyone has for sale and ones that you think I might have success with... will bring cash for payment & work around your schedule, come to you or meet you wherever or give you my address if you are up my way... [IMG]

    Any help, much appericated !

    Glenn

I have some finger leather frags if you would like one just let me know. I will be home friday night but won't be around this weekend. I also have some other frags that would be good for starters. I will be redoing my tank soon and might not have enough room in other tanks for it all. I live in benton if you want to drive out and take a look. One or two coral a month would be good to start with.

Wait at least a couple of months for an anemone, they prefer an older cycled tank and can be a bit finicky, if you want one. I have some montipora caps, mushrooms, a toadstool, and a cabbage leather, probably more.
The tank looks good, the caves are important for your fish to hide. Congrats on your new tank and welcome!

I just fragged up a bunch of star polyps and have some others too. If you can make it to Conway I can help you out.

Nice looking tank. Remember you are going to go through the dreaded new tank syndrome, so just go slow. Like Grimmett said 1 or 2 a month for the first 6 mo's. and Marti is right on the anemone. Your tank is going to have very little natural food supply and you don't want to be adding much extra for awhile.

  11. Thanks everyone for the post back!

I am planning on putting the top down on my 350Z in the morning & taking a mini-road trip up to Conway to check out Pet Country for my first time & sign up for Frag Fest, hope there are still spots available.

Really looking forward to learning how to mount & care for my coral, hear Ben speak and the whole learning experience of the workshop sounds like fun.
