Just started! Need help!

  1. Hey. Well, first of all, I heard about your meetings and I want to know how to be a part of them. Another thing: I just started a 24 gallon NanoCube about a week ago and everything seems ok. I got a crab about 3 days ago and she's doing nothing but eating and hiding. Is that ok? The little hermit crab I got is just having a good time. I'm wondering when I can get a fish to go into it to just kinda check it out. I'm thinking about a damsel. Is that a good idea? I really have next to no idea about what I'm doing. I'm hoping that you guys can help me out. :)

Your tank needs to cycle before you add any thing else. Put some food in it flakes,a piece of raw shrimp or something like that. Do you have test kits ammonia, nitirite, nitrate, you will see the ammonia rise and then nitrite will start to rise and ammonia will fall then you will see nitrate start to rise. You don't need to put any thing in the tank until that cycle has happened. It can take as much as 6 weeks for a tank to cycle so you need to go slow.As for the meetings go this month is here at my house in benton and all are welcome, the meetings are all ways the third sat. of the month at someones house we start the meeting at about 11:00am and last till 2:00 or 3:00. If you have any questions you can give me a call and I can answer any questions you might have. 920-6012 Sam

First off you need to do some research before going any farther. Get a book or do some reading on the newbie forums at reefcentral. com, or reeffrontiers.com. Secondly a damsel is a hardy fish but very territorial and I would not put one in a 24 gal nano as he well pretty much claim the whole tank for his territory. Do as Sam suggests, and then do some research and reading. And the tank is just the beginning, as Sam stated you well need test kits and other stuff other then just a tank. You should have a RO/DI unit unless you have access to a LFS that sells RO/DI water. Good luck.

I think your interest in the club is a great way to get started. There are several members that have been in the hobby for many years. The main thing is don't get in a hurry. Let the tank cycle naturally as suggested already and just be patient. This is a very rewarding hobby, complicated at times, but worth the effort. Most of the work and testing will be done in the first 2-3 months, then just regular testing and matinance will be necessary. Again research online, read books, visit other people with reef tanks, and did I say be patient. Welcome aboard and feel free to call on any of us.

Very few people enjoy damsels long term. Fish are easy to add and a nightmare to remove. Take your time deciding which fish you want. I would wait at least 2 weeks after adding your crab. I know it's hard. Got any live rock?
