My frogspawn has been in my tank about two months and is doing beautifully. However, it came on a long woody stalk that I would like to cut off. Can I cut it off without killing it? With what do I cut it off?

By "woody stalk" do you mean the exposed skeleton below the tissue of the polyp?

    yes, stalk below vessicles

My frag came from a giant tree of frogspawn. It's got about six inches of grey-brown branch before the lighter-colored coral begins.

IMO, i would not cut it. As the coral grows it will produce more head. With a short stalk, moving or mounting the coral could become a issue. With a longer stalk, it's harder to keep the coral away from other corals. My frogspawn has a 5in stalk before it get to the 1st head. But when it fully open, the stalk is completely covered. The stalk gives the coral more flow and room to grow so i would not cut it. It'll purple up so it won't look bad.

  5. I would not remove the stalk that you are speaking of - this stalk that you describe is actually the corals skeleton that has most likely become brown due to algae overgrowth. In most cases the stalk of the branching frogs spawn helps to place the coral in crevices or an anchor in the sand. Removing the tissue runs the risk of getting coral tissue much like when dogs nails are cut and you get their quick that then bleeds for a while. Your coral will not bleed but the risk of bacterial infection goes way up, so it is just best to work with the corals as they are presented for sale until you become experienced.
