Does size matter?

Made you look. I am looking for a larger reef tank but am limited to 5 foot in width, as a general rule I was looking for something like 60X24X24+. The nice folks at The Fish Tank can get me a 60X21wX27t or can customize any size. So my question is 27" too tall and will 21" be wide enough? At this point I plan to use T5's and LEDs. Any input would be appreciated and thanks in advance.

what are you wanting to keep in it? SPS?  LPS? Clams? just fish?  the depth will all depend on what you want to keep and how intense your lighting is. ?it would be roughly 111 gallons if you filled it to 25 inches

I want it all of course, SPS, LPS, Clams and a minor fish population.

My thoughts are to stay with your original size. The deeper you get the more light you will need and also you will love the 24" bottom. After having the current tank that I have which is 31" deep I would love to have a 24"tall tank because it is a pain to do anything at the bottom of the tank and I have long arms. You will be able to light the tank just fine with t-5's at a depth of 24" but when you start going taller you will start getting into the Metal Halide range of lighting. But these are just my thoughts from the experiance's that I have gone through. Good luck on your new tank upgrade. You are more than welcome to swing by sometime and take a look at what I am talking about.

Sam is right, my 400 is 32" tall and it is very difficult to reach in the bottom corners (it's also 32"deep-front to back). When I had corals in it I had 400watt MH lights and they were good for SPS at the higher points, but not past about half way. Now it is a fish only and I have VHO's and wish I had left the MH's on. If you have the room for depth (front to back) I would go with 36" deep and not over 24" tall, of course length depends on how deep your pockets are!!! Good luck with you're upgrade and keep us posted on your decision.

I agree with Norman and Sam.  A tank that is deeper from front to back gives you more landscape options also.  It can give you more depth and realism in your display tank.  Not just a rock wall at the back of the tank.  Also as noted by these two others you do not need as much light on a tank that is shallower than 30"28" (tall). Not t mention they are much easier to work on than a tall tank.

Thanks for everyones response, I agree and now I am in search of the best option. This is a great forum that I can get an honest response. If anyone knows of a source for a 60X24X24 tank othe than custom just let me know.

Thanks for all the feedback, I think at this time I am going to wait for the RSM500 to come out and give that a look before I make my upgrade. I did order a new 28 Nano I am going to set up as a frag tank while waiting. I came close to buying the 48X24X24, but decided I would hold off and get exactly what I wanted 60X24X24 or the RSM500. Thanks again, Greg
