Brine shrimp or Mysis shrimp

Discussion in 'General Reef Discussion' started by cameronkclements, Dec 1, 2016.

  1. I usually feed frozen brine shrimp, but I recently decided to try mysis shrimp. My fish don't seem to care for it. They eat it and spit it back out. I'm going to finish this pack of mysis, but I will definitely be going back to brine. Anyone else ever had a similar experience?

Not at all. I've never had fish that wouldn't eat mysis. Sometimes something new is treated that way for a while. I bet if you keep feeding it they will eat it well.

Brine shrimp do not have a lot of nutritional value unless they are newly hatched or gut loaded. They probably shouldn't be the primary food source from what I've read. Someone else chime in.

Doc is correct. Brine shrimp are like nature's Skittles. Sure they taste good but there is no nutritional value. People that grow their own Brine Shrimp typically feed them a product like Selcon in order to make the shrimp more nutritious.

not a big fan of brine. PE mysis is actually a fresh water species grown in cool Canadian water. Aquatic life known to thrive in cool waters are typically more nutrient loaded. Cold water species have to eat more food to keep upeople metabolism. I would simplify by making the comparison of cod to tilapia for human consumption. Cod is known to be much higher in nutrition because it consumes better food higher in blue green algae. So cod is much better heart healthy. ArtiPods from Reef nutrition are known to be high in nutrition as well.

    Hiya,

Agreed, brine doesn't have a lot of nutrition. My fish loved Rod's Reef's Mysin. I'd keep feeding it. I'm working through a package now and my fish fight over it.

  6. Thanks for all the feedback. hopefully its just because it is new. I will let you know how it turns out.

  7. Update. My fish now love the Mysis. I guess it was just he change that had them not really eating at first. Now they are back to always being hungry.:)
