duse anyone use an aqua-lifter to top off there tanks? they are only $14.99 plust what ever the timer would cost.
Rember I do not have a sump and was thinking of just useing an aqualifter set on a timer that will only run a few minets a day to top off small amount of water loss I have like hafe a gallon or less water and dose kalsser that is in the top off water all at the same time? to try to keep my little tank as stable as possable.
the resion I ask is some time I go two days with out adding water and add about a gallon to a 24 gallon tank if I can add 1/2 gallon a day plus a little bit of kalsser to the water it would be better for my corals wouldent it?
    Good Idea or bad?
    thanks for your Help, Glen

It would be better to have a float switch in your tank instead of a timer. It would be to hard get the amount needed per day correct. If you use a float switch to turn the pump on and off it will keep the water level correct all the time. I also dose kalkwasser as my topoff and use to use a aqualifter as the pump, but even with the filter on the aqualifter it would still get clogged up after a few days of usage. I know your thinking of doing it as cheap as possible but I suggest doing it this way and you will be much happier. Use a maxi jet 400 as your topoff pump and get a float switch and add it to the tank and your set. Talk to Blake I think you live close to him if I  remember correctly. He will be able to show you what I talking about and he may have a float switch you could buy from him or at least show you where to get them at.

just got my aqua-lifter dosing pump in the mail yesterday. $8 on ebay w/ shipping.  then won the bid on a 2 stage float switch for $22 w/ shipping. its from autotopoff.com.  did alot of research. i dont think a timer is a good idea. it either will not keep up with water loss or will will pump in too much as evaporation varied with ambient air tempature.  if your good electrical and diy things you can set up a float switch for less cost than a timer.

    will

Re: aqua-lifter for top off with out sump + classer?.

my margin for water level  is slim like 3/8 of an inch with the top if the tank only 17x19 in. I think the 400 would pump the water faster then the shout off could react wouldn't it and get me out side that 3/8 of an inch?
I will have to look into auto shout offs. again my the space I have in the back of my tank for a shut off is, 1-1/2 inch by 3 inches or anther spot 2 inches by 3 inches is there foot print that small?
I will have to go by and see Blake's setup again when he has time?
    Thanks Glen

not sure the size as is has not arrived yet.  you can get a floar switch thats about 1in x 2in and make a bracket for it.  if your water flow is to great it can cause the float switch to bounce turning it off and on really fast.  blake has a nice setup.
