I couldn't resist the price of trying first hand at trying to this guy alive in my tank. I have a 10 gallon that has been set up for about 6 months and has nothing else in it besides rock,1 daisy, and 1 damsal. Other than feeding a lot and monitoring nitrates any advice would help. Sure does look good in your own tank at home no matter what!!!!
I don't think that is a sun coral. Like Jason said, looks like a chili coral. But the above advice is great! Also, too much light can hurt them.
Coral is commonly known as the carnation coral. It is non photo synthetic. So it will need to be fed often. I'd feed alot of rotifers. Just make certain that its not in a dead spot in your tank. Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I317 using Tapatalk 2
Yeah it's a Tongan Dendronephthya coral, or carnation coral. Which is a Non-Photosynthetic coral, requiring ample flow and multiple feedings of plankton a day. Most people who keep NPS corals have automatic feeders filled with dry foods like coral frenzy, and ON coral Food. My automatic feeder goes off five times a day and then I feed foods such as reef nutrition oysterfeast and rotifeast, and Rod's coral food at least two times a day. The only other important thing is water changes, in such a small tank a 25% water change at minimum needs to be done at least every other week with the best scenario being once a week. I try and do a 60-100 gallon water change on my 200 gallon tank every other week since I have a skimmer rated for 6 times the size of my tank. Sorry if that got long winded, I just like NPS corals and like to share info on them since most people still consider them difficult/impossible to keep.
Just to update on the carnation coral....Its doing really well, still has its color and size. I have found several smaller pieces of it around the tank. I hope this is a good thing and that it means it is "seeding" out for lack of a better term. Please throw your ideas out there as to what I might be finding.
Thats awesome!!! Most of the time if that species of coral isn't happy it will start to shrink and wither away in less than a month. Congrats, keep it up.
