I have a 29g Oceanic Biocube and am having a hard time making a decision on what skimmer to put in it. Since it is self-contained, the options are limited. Oceanic makes a nano skimmer to fit inside the first of the three back chambers, but multiple people have told me it is garbage and I am inclined to agree because I have seen it run. I have read on the internet about one made by a company called Sapphire Aquatics, but I think the company has gone under because I can't find its site online. If you have any input on nano skimmers that would work and do a better job than the oceanic please let me know.

  3. I would tend to agree, although I don't have any experience with skimmers that are that small. I have messed around with Coral Life's protein skimmers which are quite popular with people but in my experience if you do not hold your breath just right they are quite lacking. I have alot of experience with becket injected skimmers and overall I would have to say that I wouldn't recommend them for several reasons. The injectors are very easily clogged with just about anything down to strands of algae . The giant skimmer at NSA is a becket injected skimmer and acts pretty much the same way according to there emplyees. The skimate of a becket is also inherrently wet and the bubbles produced are not as fine as ofther methods of skimming. So I am inclinded to think that these problems are endemic to becket injected skimmers.

I have also worked with recirculating skimmers which can be very good but I shy away from them because you have to provide water into the skimmer which means another pump in most cases.

I am currently needing to skim my new 300 gallon central sump system and have been very impressed with the ASM skimmer that Fisher 12 is running on his 200 gallon reef tank. It produces great foam and does not require water source. It is a shame that ASM no longer makes these skimmers having recently sold and now being made under the Octopus brand. The ASM skimmer is still readily available but will not be over time. I don't know if they make a HOT (Hang On Tank) model.

I hope that you can use some of this information - let us know which skimmer you decide to go with.
