I have aquired a 55 gal tank already setup with live rock and fish , but I noticed once I got it here and setup, that there are a lot of scratches in it and outside. I was wondering if there was anyway to remove them or buff them out? I would turn the tank around but the other side is painted so thats not an options. Any advise would be greatly appreciated.
scratches in glass require alot of bufifng to get rid of. most times its not worth messing with them. to buy all the stuff for it you would be clse to 30-40.00. i would expect to be able to find a good quality tank off craigslist for alittle more. in fact i seen on last night. it was a 125 gl tank for 175.00 which is a steal
I have not heard of anyone buffing glass, I have always considered scratches in glass as non repairable. Now acrylic is a different story, it scratches easily but they can be removed with progressive sanding and buffing. Acrylic tanks are all the thing on the west coast but you really do not see many acrylic tanks hear in Arkansas. I played with getting a scratch out of a sump that I built once just to see how difficult it was to do and I didn't see that it was a very easy thing to pick up and have come out looking acceptable. I purchased a 90 gallon acrylic sump about a year ago from a guy that was moving to Texas for $50 just for the acrylic use on my DIY projects that inevitably come up. Hope this helped.
this company is suppose to have good cs. call them and ask them about it http://www.gtglass.com/site/fix-glass-scratch.html
One thing to keep in mind. Some of the polishing compounds used to polish glass can have chemicals that are toxic to our animals. I would have to say that 55 gal tanks are fairly cheap brand new, surely you can find another in better condition for very little.
