Nipping Eibli and Yellow Tang

  1. I am afraid that I made an impulse buy the other day as I have always been partial to the Eibli angel and have never kept one. I had done my reading and felt that the general consensus was that it is a hit or miss with respect to their perpencity to nip at SPS.  I was willing to take a shot because my sps tank is coming to the end of its cycle and I thought now would be the time to take a shot since the only coral in it was some hydnephora.  This coral tends to be so noxious to other animals I thought there would be no way he would nip at it. I watched him for several days and never saw him nip at it but was doing a number on the Bryopsis that was in the tank. I had noticed that the tissue on the coral was not coming out as it had and was about to do a massive water change when I witnessed him picking at it while on the phone with Sam saying that I have never seen him nip at it. Sure enough he was nipping at it quite a bit so back he went to the store. I will try a pygmy angel at a later date to satisfy my desire to have an angel.

Not long after confirming the nipping of the Eibli I was pondering some nibbling of my blue Zenya as it has been in my tank and doing well for several months with all of the fish that are currently in the tank.  The initially thought that the Zenya was in a battle with the Frog Spawn but no it was the yellow tang of all things.  I can't say that I have ever known a tang to nip at corals but I had not been putting any nori in the tank for several months so in it went to give him something else to nip at. I have enough Zenya that I will not be moving the yellow tang but just thought everyone would find this interesting.

I had a Purple Tang that ate Kenya tree coral even though it got nori all the time. I didn't really have a problem with it though because it was everywhere!

I have two tangs at the moment that seem to like select LPS (wellsophylia and acans). It just goes to show that sometimes you need a frag tank to keep coral safe from any fish at any time.
