I got my MRC skimmer setup last week. We installed in externally behind my tank. I went with a genex pump and it has been just over a week and my husband found it smoking and the motor seized up this morning so I need a new pump. The feed pump(mag5) and line was well under the water level so I have no clue what happened it has been working great. I guess it was defective. Is this typical with this brand pump or is this just a fluke?

Since my skimmer is the Recirculating model MR-2R it needs to be a good size one with a good gph and I need to be able to get it asap since my skimmer is worthless without it [IMG].

I appreciate your recommendations and hope everyone is safe from the storms.

I'm suprised that pump failed so fast, I've never had a genex pump but have always heard good things about them. I don't know what you are looking for in GPH or head but I've also heard that the quiet one pumps are good and of course there always the mag pumps, never had any problem with them.

I am surprised too. Tim said he is checking with the manufacturer. I havent heard yet if he is going to refund, exchange or if I have to deal with the manufacturer. The genex had 1200 GPH High Pressure so I would want it to be comparable to that as far as gph.

I use a blueline for my recirc pump....call or email Andy at MRC. and he will recomend a pump for your needs. As fa as the other pump it sounds like it over heated, potental causes could be a valve accidently closed, a blocked suction or dischage from the pump or prolonged cavatation. I would also check and see if the mag 5 is not pluged. I clean my skimmer pumps about every two months or so when something is amis.
