Korella's shocking

    Hiya,

Okay, I was working on the tank yesterday. My GFI(?) has been tripping the last couple days. Husband says it's weak now since it's been doing so and I should replace it. However, the other issue was I got shocked again when I put my hand in the tank. The tank does have a ground wire, that is hooked up to the GFI. Also, when I go to plug in my korella's it trips the GFI, which leads me to believe this is what has a short in it.

So, what do you guys recommend? Is there another product out there that does what the korella's do? Is my GFI weak and I should replace it? It's a four outlet GFI. The ground wire is covered in coraline which I intend to clean off...could this also be an issue?

Afraid to do a water change until I get this issue solved.

I hate to make you into a test subject, but if you don't have a volt meter I suggest testing your pumps one by one in a bucket and seeing if you get shocked or the meter shows a voltage.

    Hiya,

I did have one, but it never gave me a correct reading. I may try it again though.

I bet the short is somewhere on the cord in the water. That's the weak link.

    Hiya,

Doc, you're probably right. So, I'll probably have to replace them. Is there another product out there that does the same thing as these korella's?

Are you using them as wave makers or just regular powerheads? I think the Koreallas are amongst the best bang for your buck. Of course I don't think you can beat Vortechs but they are super expensive. Sicce makes great, reasonably priced heads and a single Maspect gyre would give you all the flow you need.

I use the Jebao power heads from e-bay.

I"m using them to move my water around. I'll take a look into all of them. I don't mind spending money on them if they'll do the job and not shock the shit out of me.

John, Do you have one or two jeboa's? from what I'm reading one W25 should work on my 75. I'm just concerned if I get one the water flow might not be as good. Just wondering if I should look at two smaller one's. Now to research the other ones.

Doc, you weren't kidding about the price of the Vortech's...even the Sicco's are somewhat expensive. Granted, I like the fact that the Vortech's have no electrical parts in the tank. I'm just not sure I can swallow that price. I wonder if anyone has a used one for sale. The Gyro won't work on my tank since I have so much HOB on it.

So, I decided to use myself as a guinea pig. I cleaned off my grounder and stuck my hand into the tank. Left one of the korella's plugged in. yeap, got a shock. Unplugged it, tried again, no shock. sigh....got to see if I can find a used Vortech.

I have 2 RW4's in Jennifer's tank 55 and they are too small. I have them turned all the way up. I have 2 WP40s in my 125 and I have those turned all the way down.

2 WP 25 power heads and a TC4 or 5 is probably perfect

Earlier in the day I'd taken out both the old korella's and trashed them. I couldn't even get them to run anymore. Found an old smaller Korella and a regular freshwater powerhead. So while doing a water change tonight I realized I had left my shoes off and I was barefoot again...no shock! So, apparently my old korella's were bad. However, now I've noticed microbubbled and the occasional large bubble coming out of my protein skimmer. It's still working, but I'm wondering if the casing has been compromised and I should look into replacing that now.

I dodged a bullet today. Yesterday I pulled the 2 small power heads out of Jennifer's tank and put them in the frag tank. I then pulled the older of my two powerheads from my tank and put it in her tank. I then put a new powerhead in the spot that one was. Today I got down under Jennifer's tank and found that the controller for the powerhead had fallen off the wall and was barley hanging in the water. I don't know how but it didn't shock anything or trip the breaker. That controller is now disconnected and is drying out.

Kim: I had some Koralias do the same thing. It's tempting to buy more of those but I really feel I'm not interested in putting anymore devices that run 110 into the water than I have to. I've since gone over to Tunze's and I like the idea that they are low voltage motors in the water. So even if they do spring a leak I won't get 110v coming at me. That is also what's appealing to me for Vortecs and there are other pumps that aren't putting 110V into salt water.

For you and John, I'm glad things turned out OK. Sometimes...they don't.

John, when you said 'breaker' I hope you have a GFCI breaker, right? Regular breaker won't trip with a ground fault.

    Hiya,

Jon, I'm really happy with my vortec. I can change the intensity of the flow and how the water is moved. Plus, if I ever to upgrade my tank, I won't need to purchase another pump to move my water around.

Dang, girl! You weren't messin around! Im impressed with how much water they move for sure. I like not having submerged motors, too! I'm sure you will be pleased for quite a while with them. And since they are so versatile if you ever do manage to get a bigger setup chances are good they will still be useful.

Next time your water makes you tingly it won't be them!
