How to size equipment?

When buying equipment, do you size it -- a skimmer for example -- based on the water capacity of the aquarium+sump before or after adding substrate and rocks? 260 lbs of sand will displace about 30g of water according to the charts and I don't know how much water 100lbs of rock will displace but I'm sure it's not insignificant.

I've been planning around ~150g of water (tank+sump) capacity but it'll actually be 80-90g total. Which numbers should I use for equipment planning?

I like to go with the total tank capacity and get the next one up

If i wont one for a 80 gallon ill look for one for 100 gallon
But that is just me LOL

  3. Like everyone else, I generally subscribe over estimating what I need. That goes for my chillers, skimmers, calcium reactors, ect.
