I think it's hard to go wrong with LEDs. They will reach your depth, you can adjust them to whatever coral you want. The only question is price range. That will make a big difference.

everything i have read says that leds are only good up to 18 inches of depth. Is that old tech LED?

Must be because they'll reach further than any other type of light. Do you know what type if corals your wanting to have

I would get the best LED's you can afford. It starts out with soft corals, but you'll quickly want to grow LPS and then SPS. Trust me! :)

What would you recommend? Budget around $250

If you could increase that budget a little, I'd recommend the maxspect razor 16k. I'm using it on my 33 gallon with great results. I have photos in the tank pictures section of this site. I'm also building a 225g, & will likely stick with maxspect. I've not had any problems keeping anything under these lights so far. I have grown soft corals, sps, lps, & an anemone under this light. I also got my first clam last week, so I am still observing how it will do under the light.

I'm not going against what Allan's saying, in fact I have a maxspect razor also and love it. But I also understand how crazy expensive this hobby can get. If you know you can't spend the money, You can also take a look at Oceans Revive arctic T247 light. It's $199, programmable, full spectrum, for the money it's a great deal.
