Help with quieting skimmer venturi intake?

Discussion in 'DIY' started by schillerstreetreef, Apr 27, 2009.

  1. I have recently started the two internal venturi skimmers on my new 185 gallon setup and need some suggestions on how to get rid of the sucking sound made by the hose drawing in air to the pump. Does anyone have any suggestion on a diy way of silencing them and still having good air flow?

can you put an asprin bottle with cotton balls in the line somewhere for a silencer?

  3. Can you be more specific about how to do the aspirin bottle and cotton ball?

i would drill teh base for the diameter of the intake hose and silicone it in and then remove the cap and loosly stuff cotton it it and then either leave the cap off or drill holes in it for airflow as well. it should not restrict air flow but should make it much quiter

I'm just asking since I have never run this type of skimmer, but wouldn't you need to put some screen or something in the bottom first to keep from sucking the cotton in, or doesn't it make that much suction. How about using the bottle idea with some of that blue filter floss, it is poris and should let air through better.

Lengthen the air intake hose so the end is under the stand or even into your basement space
