I now have three clams (1 ultra blue maxima and 2 ORA Duresas) in my tank and am trying to get them to attach to existing rocks.  Will they eventually attach to a rock if they are placed on top of one or do I have to put them in the sand with a small rock burried under them to get them to attach?  The rocks in my tank are too big to pull out to attach them so I am trying to figure out a way that I can place them on a rock where I want them and let them attach.

My question is, do they need to feel sand under their shells to get them to attach or will they attach to a bare rock if placed on top of one?

I have a big crocea clam that walked off of the rock that I tried to put it on and attached to an acan colony.  Both are doing fine.  Good luck.  I tried to do what you are doing but it didn't work for me.

Wow, check this out!!!  I set him on a rock about two hours ago, left for lunch and came back to this.  Apparently he likes his new rock so much that he attached himself to it within hours.  Problem fixed by Mr. Clam himself.  I didn't realize they could attach this fast.
