What's your budget? Compact or full-size? We have a Canon SD600 and it works great for a compact model. I read a lot of reviews and comparison tests before purchasing a couple of years ago. Try www.cnet.com for reviews.

I can spend somewhere around $400.

That's above my experience level. You can get a NICE camera for $400. We have some photo enthusiasts in the club that know more than me at that price-point.

Jim can give you a good weblink that does a pretty thorough comparison of cameras. He has a fancy canon.. I have a Canon Powershot that isn't bad at all. My dream is the Nikon D80 but probably can't find that in your price range, maybe a nice used model?

I heard Circuit City in Fayettville is closing, and things are being marked down by 30% currently. I have not been there, but that is what some of my friends at work stated. They may have some good deals on cameras.

I have a Canon Rebel XTi, I believe that's close to your price range. It's a great camera, very user friendly. Everything is adjustable on it, plus 10mp pics are hard to beat. I'm a rookie with all of the settings, but the more I use it, the more I'm impressed with it. I ran across a semi-pro photographer last year, she said she has two of them in her arsenal because they're so easy to use. My Mom uses the Rebel XT, it's 8mp, you could find one of those for $50-100 less possibly. The packaged software is easy to use also. If you want a point and click kind of camera, this wouldn't be a good choice though.

I have an sd600 and an sd630. I must say that I love them both. They are small sized cameras that will take a really nice picture. The reason I chose the sd600 was the quick shutter response. I have small kids and it had the quickest response of the compact cameras. My only and minor complaint would be weak flash.

My mother in law has a rebel. It's really nice but, huge. CNET and dPreview are really good sites.

Fry's Electronics Store is HUGE up north:

Newegg.com is THE BEST STORE EVER. I'm a computer guy and this is where I buy everything.

I have a hard time believing Canon Rebels are less than 100.00. I too have an XTi and paid 800.00 for it (when they first came out). I need to go look at Best Buy, you may have gotten a steal of a deal.

the canon rebal xti has dropped in price quite a bit recently since the new xsi has came out. with circuit city going out and the holiday specials coming up i would venture to say getting an xti for around 400. new is a possibility. my ex is a photograhpher and she was selling an xti for 250.00 a couple of months ago. i can see if she still has it if you would like. its in very good shape.

I would have a hard time believing that too. The sentence states the Rebel XT may possibly be found for $50-100 less than an XTi.

We had an Olympus 850 SW, one of the water/weatherpoof cameras for about 3 days. Returned it due to poor perfomance.

tfrank, what do you want/expect from the camera?

I have the Canon Powershot S5IS. It is a 8MP. I paid around 500.00 last year when they first came out which I am sure that they are cheaper now. Here is a site that you can go to that a lot of photographers use that is very helpful. They do reviews on all the camers that are out there and give detailed informatiom on them.

Also if you are looking for one that has a lot of zoom on it, get one that has a lot of optical zoom verses the digital zoom. You will lose the quality of photos when you use the digital zoom instead of the optical zoom.

  13. For point and shoot I have a Cannon powershop sd900is (w/ image stablization) which I think is the best add to get along with the widest angel. My powershot had the lost focal length for a camera in its class at the time and allows you to get alot in your picture. I payed around 400 originally but bet that you can get them for alot less on ebay now. I have since purchased a Pentax k10d witch is a higher end dslr and enjoy that a lot.
