From everything I have read they are great, have always wanted to give them a try, but I can't seem to bring myself to pay that much for them. Anyway when the aptasia are gone they all die. I haven't set up a tank to specificly grow aptasia to keep a colony going. May be a good project for the future for someone.
The last 50lbs of live rock I bought is covered with Aiptasia. This sounds like a great option if you have the time and the Aoptasio is not currently killing your corals. I would like a few to rid them from the rock where I can not reach with Aiptasia X. They are very pretty too!
Here is another article that should be read. http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2004-01/ac/feature/index.php These guys are very small and get sucked into powerheads and pumps very easy and go into overflows easy also. They do not do very well in high flow situations also.
I have used them in the past. Worked well for awhile then they disappeared. They are tiny and hard to keep track of.
If you have a lot of flow it will be a problem for them. I bought some years ago and they seem to just float around or get blown around. I would turn pumps off when you first introduce them to let them get attached to the rock.
They do have a hard time in high flow systems. Turning your pumps off is a good idea to get them settled.
From what I have read on a few boards, people often pass them around in order to extend their life and not let them just die when they run out of aiptasia to eat. I understand they are tiny and everything, but at least trying to share them seems like the best idea.
Blake that is a good idea. I have never had any need to use, but I know alot are lost to overflows and powerheads.
