As requested, here is a little write up on How To: Furan 2 Dip WARNING: Wear protective gear (Latex or Nitrile Gloves, eye protection, etc…) when working with Zoas or Palys (Z&P). Palytoxin is no joking matter and it can cause some serious health problems. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK! With anything reef related, just because it works for me doesn’t mean it will work for you. Also, Furan 2 is yellow and may change the color your Z&P frag for a few days. WHEN: If you notice a zoa or paly not looking healthy. Whether that is from Zoa pox (white pimple looking bump), brown fungus, or just not looking healthy. SUPPLIES: 2 deli containers (like the ones we use at our meetings) or larger if you desire. Tank water (NOT new water, there is no need to stress them more), a packet of furan 2, a turkey baster or something else for water movement and a timer. HOW: Step 1: Fill both containers with 8-ish ounces of your tank water. One will be dip, one will be rinse. Step 2: Pour one packet of furan 2 into one container and stir it until it is completely dissolved. Step 3: Completely submerge your Z&P frag in the dip and let it soak for 10 -15 minutes Use the turkey baster to blow stuff around in the cup. Don’t be afraid to blow that water directly at the Z&Ps. Step 4: After the Z&P frag has soaked for 10-15 minutes, place it in the rinse cup for an additional 10-15 minutes. Once again, occasionally blow water on it with the turkey baster. If the frag has a light case of zoa pox then repeat the dip every other day for 3 dips total. After the 3rd dip, let the frag rest for a week. Repeat if necessary. If the zoa frag has a bad case of zoa pox, brown fungus, or just looks really bad, then Repeat this for 3 consecutive days and then let it rest for a week. Repeat this cycle 1 more time. It may take several rounds to clear it all up. Hopefully this helps. John
If I get a colony of zoas I FW dip it with Furan, if it's a frag that came from a vendor or hobbyist I FW dip it. Typically the wild zoas are the issue, that said if the frag starts looking bad I usually do a Furan dip ASAP.
I used furan 2 dip as instructed and the brown fungus is gone. I lost about half the frag because I hesitated before treating them. I really noticed the difference after the second dip. Here is a before and after pics. BEFORE AND AFTER
Looks good Cameron! I think I may go ahead and dip mine too. I'm not seeing the fungus anymore but they still haven't fully opened so something is keeping them unhappy.
Far from a frag. I am holding the goodies for Frag Fest. All the zoas colonies are getting Furan dipped while we wait for frag fest.
