My next piece I am working on getting is a protien skimmer. Any suggestions on a good skimmer for a 100 gal tank. Any input would be appreciated.
I'd say either marineland or octopus. Having had both it seems the marineland is smaller but harder to clean and quieter. where as the octopus seems a bit loader and takes up a lil bigger foot print but it also is alot easier to clean in my opinion. they both seem to be about the same for break in time and for getting really discusting crap out of the water. avoid any of the box looking ones tho..... me and my buddy have both had one.... I think it was the worse piece of crap in the world. u would be better off with a spagetti strainer tied to a bamboo pole while swinging from the ceiling fan blindfolded trying to scoop out the particles. No exageration there. im sure of it. Whatever option you choose just be patient with the break in period and adjusting, if you do you can really tune it in well to optomise it.
I have a SRO 2000 on a 90 gal which works well. (super reef octopus). It is the sss version (super space saver). Seems like I ordered it from Reef Specialities, but not sure. I am suprised on how quiet it is. I initially had water level to high and it didn't seem to skim well but now it is in about 8" of water (I think) and works well.
Here is the skimmer that I am running on my 150. It is a beast and is pretty quiet. It really produces alot of dark skimmate. http://cgi.ebay.com/Bubble-Magus-BM-180 ... 19c2abed23
ASM G-2 got mine for 240 rated for 150 gal I think. Not too large of a foot print started skimming nasty skimmate within minutes. Great bang for buck. Raffle grabber
