Since I've been at this before I know how easy it is to jump in and want to start up a tank and start stocking it.

I've been out for several years due to life issues... anyway.

I'm now able to get back into the hobby and I want to design a well though out system.

I'm working with a 20 gallon hex with a custom stand. I'm limited underneath for much of a sump or other components. I prefer my display tank to be clutter free so I want to come up with options.

At the moment the tank came with a Fluval 50, acrylic cover, and a 18" coralife led light.

So much has become available to the hobby since I got out.

I have looked at the Apex JR, WP10 wave maker.

I also enjoy DIY projects so I'm not beyond building some components.

I'm looking for suggestions, ideas, thoughts on the build and design. I'm in no hurry to start it up. 20170902_183452.jpg

Well ... not knowing the dimensions, could you fit a 5 gallon tank underneath for a sump? Or maybe a fuge or something? It would at least add a bit of water volume for stability. Another option for added volume and filtration would be a canister. I've heard they can be nitrate factories in salt tanks though. Maybe it could be used with matrix, marine pure, rubble or something loaded in and whatever other things like carbon or whatever and no filter floss ... so water would just go through like a sump with no filter sock.

If evap is too much of a problem, you could get another piece of acrylic and custom cut it with smaller spaces around the filter and maybe just a small hole in the front to fit your finger in to lift for access ... or just keep it solid and add a small piece to lift the top ... like the versa tops have that little plastic piece on the top to lift open.

As far as lighting ... I know nothing about that light but know a lot of people use AI Primes for small tanks.

The MP10 might be too much for that tank ... I have one (I'm pretty sure it's a 10 but now I'm doubting myself) on one end of my 4' tank and it puts out quite a bit of flow! I would definitely try to find an adjustable flow pump though.

Just thoughts ... maybe it will work, maybe not. Things to think about maybe?

Unfortunately the door opening is only 6" wide. I suppose I can build a custom sump that's extra tall or build a hex and go in from the bottom but if I have any problems I won't be able to remove it.

If i was to go with a sump should I consider an HOB drain to the sump or make a side to side skimmer box and drill the back.

Could you cut the back of the stand and add a back door that is wider by chance?

And I don't know about the drain. Mine is a built in overflow box.
