So, since I’ve been in this hobby I have used Red Sea Coral Pro Salt and have had mostly softies. But, now that I’ve added more SPS & and more coralline algae, I find my Alk draining very quickly. I am thinking about switching to Fritz RPM salt to stabilize things. Any gotchas or things for which to watch out? Thanks!!
I was using Fritz and ended up having to start dosing Alk, calc and mag so I just switched back to instant ocean reef crystals. I haven't done too many water changes since switching back so I can't really say if it's better or not.
Red Sea Coral Pro is much higher in Alkalinity than almost any other salt. A lot higher than Fritz which usually is around 8.0 for me. If you switch to Fritz you will have more problem not less. I don't like the high alkalinity salts because I like to keep mine around 8 and with those I get a spike upward of alkalinity every time I do a water change. If you have happy growing stony coral of any significant size you will likely have to start dosing to maintain stability. You can do it manually or with simple timers/pumps. Just monitor and adjust to keep it stable.
@LJC6780 , Doc is absolutely right. Switching to RC from Fritz will only cause you to dose more. Fritz has higher parameters than RC.
I'm confused. He didn't say anything about me or RC. He was talking about switching from Red Sea to Fritz
I'm pretty sure he was saying he agreed with you and I. You mentioned having to dose since switching to Fritz (because of it's lower alkalinity).
