Newbie Acan Placement Question

  1. image.jpg Hi guys! I'm brand new to the hobby, with a 28gallon nanocube. 25 pounds of live rock and a 2" sand bed. The tank has been cycling right at 4weeks. Lots of life, activity, and zooplankton. So cool. I'm full of questions, but my first is placement of this ACAN. 1. Sand bed or liverock, does it have a preference? 2. Lighting. The nanocube has 14k LEDs. I can't tell if the acan is happy slightly shaded down low, closest to the sand bed as pictured. It's plump and colorful...but I'd hate to glue it down and then watch this beauty decline. If I choose to wait...what signs are apparent of too much light? Or Not enough light?

    Thank you!

I've always placed mine on the sandbed. I believe you can grow them on rock too. But on the sandbed, a lot of LPS grow into a nice big dome shape. I'd start them out on the sandbed to begin with.

I have some on the sandbed and some slightly higher on the rocks. The ones on the samebed seem to be happier. If you leave them on the sandbed for now you will have the opportunity to move them up closer to the lights if need be

Mine seem to grow better higher up and can stand pretty intense light. But they grow in the sand bed as well. I think your good either way. I use the reaching out rule and it works well for me.

They look pretty happy at that level to me! I don't think the Hidden Cup Coral is very aggressive. I've never had one injure another coral

    Hiya,

I've placed mine mostly lower on the rocks with T-5's. However, due to an aggressive Angel, I moved them to my bio-cube with compacts. They're full and happy there.

Yours look quite happy where they are. I'd leave them there for a week or two and see how they do.

  8. Thank you Kim! I'm not really sure how to translate the lighting needs of these guys with the intermediate lights listed on my cube. I moved the acan just a couple of inches to the left onto the sand bed and slightly out of the shadow of the live rock overhang and halimeda. Tonight their little tentacles were out in full force. Thank you guys so much for the fabulous finds at reef fest!

Ive found that acans get better coloring in less intense light. Just my 2cents
