I am brand-spanking new into keeping corals and wanted to get some insight as to which direction I should be going. I currently have a tiny frogspawn frag, a cluster of green start polyps, and a cabbage leather frag. What would be some hearty corals that have a good chance of surviving me as a newbie? I was thinking that it would be neat to get a larger piece of frogspawn and maybe some interesting mushrooms or zoanthids?? Am I on the right track? I am not looking for anything big or expensive, I want to go slow and ease into keeping corals. Also, once I settle on a coral type, what is the best way to go about purchasing what I want? I saw a sell area, but I didn't know if I should put out a "wanted to buy" post or what was appropriate. Thank you so much for any help you can offer.
I have found zoas, mushrooms and hammer to be easy and pretty too! There are lots of kinds of mushrooms. If you get some I'd try to keep them on a separate rock so they don't take over eventually! There are a ton of zoas. I find some to grow faster than others, even sitting right next to each other. I really love the movement of Hammers, which are quite similar to frog spawn. I have green tip and purple tip. I have some zoas I could frag soon I think. I could probably frag some mushrooms too. I know I have a small blue mushroom frag. No clue how much to charge!
Welcome Brandon. Yes you can place a WTB ad there is nothing wrong with that. As for what type, Soft coral are typically easier than LPS Large Polyp Stony. LPS ae typically easier than SPS Small Polyp Stony. Easy pieces are Mushrooms (except Ricordea), Leathers (except Fiji yellow), Zoanthids, Xenia, (GSP) Green Star Polyps, Nephthea (Kenya Tree), Sinularia. The non photosynthetic soft coral are hard to keep but they are easy to identify because they are red. I hope that helps a little. John
Yep. I've got a few that are hanging on a broken piece of rock. I've actually got a lot of frags from the tank move. The way we packed everything wasn't exactly ideal!
@LJC6780 keep me in mind when you get ready to price the corals you think I might be able to keep. I have family in Bryant so I can come down that direction any time.
Mark, this may change your mind. I didn't put two and two together until last night but I got "bit" by Palytoxin a few weeks ago, April 8th to be specific.. On April 8th my dad and I drove up to WUW in Fayetteville to buy some zoas for this months meeting. We got home pretty late so gave them a quick dip in Coral Rx before I put them in the frag tank. I barehanded them the whole time. The following day, Sunday the 9th I wasn't feeling well but I assumed it was because of the busy day prior. I dipped them again and again barehanded them. That night I couldn't sleep at all. I hurt too much. The 10th was even worse. It was so bad that by 0800 I told my boss that I had to go home. It hurt to breath, my kidneys felt like I was punched in them, muscle spasms worse than normal and just uncontrollable pain. Seriously uncontrollable pain. I couldn't do anything including laying down without hurting. The following day I was still pretty bad. I hurt so bad that I called my Pain Dr and they set up an appointment for the same day. They bumped up my pain meds and set me up for a nerve block and epidural. We thought it was related to my normal back pain and back issues. Zoas never crossed my mind. And yes I did have the metallic taste. I thought it was medicine side effect. https://www.cdc.gov/mmwr/preview/mmwrhtml/mm6431a4.htm
