VIBRANT

Discussion in 'General Reef Discussion' started by SilentReefer, Apr 21, 2017.

  1. Has anyone used Vibrant? I have caulerpa growing inside a couple of my colonies and cannot pull it out. It's supposed to work. I'll end up losing my fuge in the process though.

You don't like caulerpa? I'd actually like to have some in my sump. I had some once upon a time but it all sort of melted away for some reason. Never figured out why. I'd be happy to take some off your hands.

  3. I don't like it intertwined inside for coral, no. ;)

I've got some in my sump as well. Happy to share. I've got a feeling it has the ability to make its way into your display though.

Will you be at the frag fest tomorrow?

  5. No. I work every weekend.

Yes Caulerpa spreads pretty easily from the sump to the display. That is why I use Chaeto.

  7. I'm contemplating buying Vibrant to kill off all algaes in my tank. I'll then reboot with just cheato.

I've read most of the Vibrant thread on R2R and the gist is that Vibrant basically works like carbon dosing to lower nitrates and phosphates to a lesser extent. If they aren't elevated I'm not sure if it would help.

Of course it's possible that if your algae burden is big enough it could be keeping free nitrate used up so that your tests won't reflect the nitrate balance in the tank.

  9. Yeah, adding a non sustainable bacteria to out-compete other algaes. My concern is the cyano that almost everyone gets.

    I don't test N and P. This is a young tank problem.

Not that they are non issues; Balancing is always a tight rope. The problem I have is the introduction of pest algaes through frags. Caulerpa has out-competed my cheato.

Side note: I added turf and caulerpa to my fuge along with cheato. Cheato is gone. For anyone wanting a fuge for N and P I suggest using only cheato.

Young tank? Did you set up another tank?!

I have carbon dosed with vinegar and with NoPOx (vinegar/vodka mix). Didn't have any problem with cyano with vinegar, did with NoPox. I hear similar results from folks that have used both vinegar and vodka.

My only complaint was bacterial bloom that made me have to clean the glass more often and chunks of bacterial film that would blow out of the return pipes if it was turned off and then back on again. Lowered nitrates from around 20 to 2 in about 5-6 weeks.

  11. Same tank. I simply mean testing N and P is not necessary once coral grow larger to keep levels down. New tanks frequently need GFO and sometimes multiple agents to control. This shouldn't always be necessary, IMO. My problem is I feed my fish multiple times a day when not at work. They get lots of pellets and frozen every day.

I'm thinking Vibrant would 'reset' my tank, so to speak.
