Sump and chaeto

ok guys, if you've been following along you know my 85 is now up and running and I'm in the process of getting the stuff transferred over. Well I've never used a real sump (only the internal one in the biocube 29) before and have a few questions. So I've pretty much got it set up like Kevin had it (guy I bought it from) with the skimmer in chamber 1, probes and heaters in chamber 2, I'd like to put a coarse sponge in the over flow chamber to catch any bits of chaeto that break off, and then I have the return pump in the last chamber. It's a Trigger Emerald 34". I'd like to pull my chaeto from the bc29 and add it to the chamber 2 and connect the fuge light there. Is this the best place to put it? Where can I get a piece of coarse sponge to put in the overflow chamber? I have a small piece with a trigger crystal 30" but it's too small. I've tried searching online but just not sure what I need to be searching for! Everything I've seen seems too fine and really solid. I'm looking for the Plastic Brillo pad looking sponge. Big holes for good flow.

I've also got some rock rubble in that chamber and plan to move a small bag of denitrifying bacteria soaked Matrix in there too. I'm going to move my other fast flow cycled Matrix to the overflow chamber.

Any other recommendations for sump setup? Here's a current pic. Don't mind some of the wires, I'm still getting everything place correctly and tied off.

  2. I would imagine BRS has the sponge your looking for.

I'm not sure it really matters where the fuge goes. It will pull out nutrients no matter the placement.

I've looked there before and just did again. Nothing even close came up with "sponge" or "sump sponge" in the search.

If I can find mine you can have it. I'm too lazy to clean it often and it's a nitrate factory if you don't

Do you have chaeto in your sump? Do you have problems with your return pump clogging up with bits?

Well then maybe I don't need a sponge. I just know that in the bc29 little bits would flow through to the pump if I didn't have the bag of Matrix blocking the flow through.

My chaeto seems to grow in a very tight ball. I may see a small string float in the DT once in a blue moon but that's usually after I've harvested it. Never had it clog my return pump but I'm running a Vectra and they have a large intake. When I ran a Sicce I would occasionally have to reach in and clear the intake of chaeto.

I guess I'll just give it a go as is and see how it goes.
