Hannah phosphate checker or Hannah phosphorus checker?

Discussion in 'Chemistry' started by NatalieMadison, Feb 8, 2017.

  1. I'm needing an upgrade to phosphate tests. The Hannah has been recommended to me. However, when I go online, the standard Hannah hi713 phosphate test for marine and fresh comes up with negative reviews about testing zero, even though other tests read .8ppm and .7ppm.

These customers have called the mfg who suggests they need the Hannah hi736 instead...ultra low phosphorous reading.

In reef world...is checking for phosphorus the same as checking for phosphate?

BRS just released a really good video on this

DC's video explains the difference. Since our aim for PO4 is 0.02-0.05 the ULR phosphorous makes the most sense. The math conversion they seem to make so much of is really a non factor. If fact after doing it this way for a couple of years I don't really need to do the conversion 4-15 ppb...good, more than that .....bad!

  4. Exactly what I was looking for!

  5. And thank you for simplifying that math bit!! Phosphorous check it is...with a desire for 4-15ppb on the read! Thank you!

The math is not really a real problem....ppb x 3.0661/1000 gives you the number we talk about (0.02-0.05). So technically its 4-16 but 15 is easier to remember. :p

  7. My ultra low phosphorus reading is giving me a read of 21. We've established the highest safe msrmt would be 16. I have a small bag of phosguard in the tank. What should I do to drop it a bit more in this nanocube?

I'm having the same issue. It could be that the GFO is already exhausted if the level was very high to begin with. More likely for me at least is that I don't have enough flow to the media. I may move my chemipure to the first chamber for a while.

  9. I wouldn't get too hung up on a number. Coral are very tolerant. If coral look good then no big deal. I've burned a lot of Sps dropping phosphate quickly. Softies probably care far less about tight phosphate control and unless acros are turning brown......meh.

I got the phosphorous test too. Mine was reading super high and I threw in some phosguard. It was down to .22/76 as of yesterday when I replaced it with new. I'll test again tomorrow to see how it's going.

  11. My Hannah checker hit a phosphorous level of 54 today. I think I'm going to give up on the suncoral. I know I'm over feeding the tank. But wow! From 21 to 54. Everything still looks healthy with exception to the suncoral. And my red bubble algae has tripled in size.

You know, I got a couple with my new tank and I asked what he fed and how often and he said he fed it at first then just fed the tank after a while. They are both huge and open up all the time! I've been hitting them a little with some frozen food when I feed the fish but haven't been going crazy.

I'm also running a GFO reactor so I'm sure that's keeping t all nice and low. It was 0.02 last check!

The one I got from you is adjusting to the new tank also. It hasn't been fully open and happy but has been puffing up and trying to open when I am feeding. So hopefully it'll come along quickly and do as well as the others.

    Check this out!

So apparently I was wrong! I thought these must have been some monster sun corals and I was doing something wrong with the ones you gave me but I came across this tonight. They are a cousin to the sun coral!
