JBJ 1/15th Chiller

  1. This is just a note for anyone who has a 1/15th hp JBJ chiller like the one that I have running on my 29gallon Nano Softie.  It blew a fuse about a month ago and needed to replace it asap.  I went to Industrial Electric where I get all of my specialty stuff and they did not have the 5am 250volt GDC fuse that I needed. I was told that a 5 amp 125volt GDC would do OK since I was only plugging it into a 125 watt standard plugin. I blew two before I made a call to on of the electrical gurus that works on our Angel One helicopters and he stated that while most fuses do operate on amperage that the startup load of a compressor is high enough if only for a millisecond to exceed the voltage of a 125 volt fuse causing it to blow. I had always thought that you only needed to be under the amperage to avoid blowing a fuse.

I went to order a 5 amp 250 volt GDC fuse and was irritated to find that everyone marketing the fuses to aquarist wanted $10 FOR 3 with $10 shipping on something that doesn't weigh more than a feather. Crazy!!!  I found them on Amazon for about $6 with $4 shipping, 50% less than what was being charged to aquarist.  This is kind of irritating too in that just because we are hobbyist that pay large amounts for fish and equipment something as simple and cheap as a fuse purchase becomes a mode for EXTORTION!  People often complain about lfs markups but at least I know that they are making up for overhead - their is no excuse for an online etailer to do it.

Oh - by the way the fuse from Amazon works great and my animals are a bit cooler this evening.

If it has saltwater written on it anywhere, it is automatically going to cost more money : (  evil marketers.

Yea like the pond heaters In North little rock at the LFS they are $69.99 at tractor supply the same heater is $29.99.  While I know its hard for a small business to compete with a large chain that just is to much of a difference IMO.
