Like the title says, show off your Montipora corals. It doesn't matter if it is a common Red Monti Cap or something crazy sexy like a JF Beach Bum, show it off. I'll start with a common Red Monti Cap fighting with a Montipora Undata.
Buyer beware. Sometimes an orange Montipora Capricornis is actually a red Capricornis photographed with a gel filter. Common Red Monti Cap no filter Same Red Cap but with an orange filter John
Rainbow Montipora. This one is encrusting which means it will grow over your rock the same way coralline algae will cover your rock. New growth has a purple base with red polyps. That transitions to a blue base with green polyps. Old growth has a red base with green polyps.
Montipora Spongodes is a really cool coral. It is bright green, easy to care for, grows very unpredictable. It branches, encrusts, and plates.
They are brown. The polyps look like Milk Chocolate dots. They are very distinct and pronounced. There is no doubt when the polyps are open.
Montipora Hirsuta (Elkhorn coral)- This species has the most random growth of any of my Montipora. It is a hardy, fast growing coral but not extremely common in the hobby. Here is a picture of some growing on a frag plug on my sand bed as well as a colony growing on my back wall. Both are the same color even though one is in the sand while the other it at the top. It is starting to grow out of the water. The top of it is out of the water when the wave trough passes. (High part of a wave it the crest, low part is the trough) John
How did you attach the elkhorn to the glass? Just glue the frag to the glass, or did you use a plug? I really want to encrust my back glass with sunset and rainbow monti once my tank matures some more.
The first time I tried, I just glued it in place with several small points of contact. It only lasted about a week or two before it fell off. I picked it back up and set it down on my frag rack and let it encrust on the rack for a few months. After it grew a nice bottom I twisted the rack in my hands and it popped off with a big flat base. That gave me a bigger surface area to glue. I scraped off a small spot on the back glass and glued it it place.
Hiya, Here's some of mine. The green one I got at the Fish Tank, no idea what it is. I also got a piece of Poker something from the Fish Tank. The red one in the back was supposed to be orange, got it from Alan and the green above it from David Hicks.
