I'm building my aquarium from the ground up, and this is what i've come up with so far... if anyone has any ideas or thoughts about it please let me know before i get started if there is something I can do to make it even better.. Thanks guys
The two things I might watch out for here is your skimmer section being 15" tall, and that last baffle before your return pump letting water through the bottom instead of it flowing over the top. Check to make sure the skimmer you want will operate well in 15" of water. I had to build a egg crate stand to raise the height of my skimmer so it would work properly. With that last baffle letting water through the bottom instead of the top you will have absolutely no surface agitation in the last section which will create a stagnant area on the surface of the water. This doesn't seem to cause to much problem for the tank but it can cause the smell of the tank to be more "fishy" than it needs to be. With the media basket there, I don't see any reason in having that last baffle to me. Other than that It looks like a great build, I love the standard 120 tanks dimensions a lot for most reef tank inhabitants.
Good catch I did do that backwards lol.... always good to get a second look like the saying measure twice cut once. Thanks for the catch on that one and yeah i will more then likely have to elevate the skimmer, but did that so my refugium could be deeper. I would build a larger tank but i already have a $600 dollar light fixture for 48" other wise i would be going huge.... NEXT time lol
I just wanna know how you guys are doing the google sketch and stuff I still do mine in my head and on paper Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I do as well, but i just used the paint app on the computer to draw it up so i could get some pointers... haven't heard of google sketch ill have to check it out its probably easier.... lol
I love that sump! I was wondering about the four baffles before the return too. A couple of newb questions. The hole sizes are the size bulkheads you're putting in not the actual hole size right? Have you considered three 1" drain bulkheads instead of two 1 1/2"? You could run a full siphon/open standpipe/emergency set up that would be super safe and quiet.
yep your right the actual hole size is like 2.38" i believe and and the reason i did two 1 1/2" holes is because that will yield 1200GPH and my return pump with yield 1200GPH so its and exact match dont need to mess with tuning the flow.... i like to work smarter not harder lol
Check the pump curve for the pump you want to use. Pumps are rated at a zero elevation discharge head. You are probably going to end up with about a 4 foot discharge head (Final display water height to the top of the sump water level in the return section) which will drop your output from 1200 GPH to probably less than a 1000. I'm currently cycling a 135 with about the same configuration and just one of the 1" drains can handle the flow.
I think you are very close then. I measured the difference in height for my setup and I have 4'6" of pumping height. If you end up the same it puts you between 1200 & 1375 GPH. I'm using a smaller pump than you and only have about 800 GPH after losses.
I run two mag 12's on my tank and have two 1" drains. However I'm using the aquatic life megaflow kits so it allows for a lot more drainage than a standar one inch pipe. Just play around with it, that part of the fun
From documentation: Specs: 115 Volt 60 Hz 145 Watts - 1.5 amps 21 Feet Shut Off 3/4 in/out threaded 1800gph at zero feet 1350gph at 4 feet 25gph at 21 feet 6.5" L x 3" W x 5.5 H (without sponge filter)
Depends on how it's set up. A full siphon on a 1" will drain around 1500 gallon per hour according the the engineer on RC. I believe it. My 1" has to be adjusted down significantly to match up with my 1000gph pump. If it's set up as a Durso it obviously will be a lot less.
right i know the full siphon pulls a lot more water then the durso.... still on the fence about what kind of plumbing i want to do lol
OK!!!!! so what are the ideas on this? im thinking about doing a completely clear overflow with clear acrylic tubing and clear pvc for the durso stand pipes.... i think it would be pretty sweet to not see anything, but idk never seen one done like that... any feed back..
